Observation of Sun Dogs in Stockholm

Date: April 20, 1535 • Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Sun dogs were observed over Stockholm, Sweden, inspiring Vädersolstavlan, the oldest coloured depiction of the city.

A sun dog, sundog or mock sun, also called a parhelion in atmospheric science, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the Sun. Two sun dogs often flank the Sun within a 22° halo, parallel to the horizon.
